Finding Your Way Around: Launchpad Views

Launchpad Views: Make Your Own Workspace

Part of Finding Your Way Around: build a view of the applets you use every day, make it your default, and change it later without uninstalling anything. It follows The launchpad is home, which explains where the tiles come from.

The running example: your job at GadgetSphere Sdn Bhd is accounts receivable, so you need four or five applets out of the dozens the company runs, one click away.

While a menu set is being edited, the cross on a launchpad tile uninstalls the applet; take an applet out of a view with the cross in the sidebar list instead.

  1. Build a view and make it your default: press +, add the applets, Save, then press and hold its button and choose Make as default.
  2. Change it later from the sidebar’s Menu Set list, never with the cross on a launchpad tile.

Launchpad views: make your own workspace

A view is a named shortlist of your installed applets. It is saved as a record on your login, in the platform’s own database rather than in any tenant. That one fact explains most of how views behave:

  • Your views go with you. They are the same whichever tenant you sign into, and on any browser. A colleague never sees your views, and you never see theirs.
  • Nobody can build one for you. No administrator screen creates or edits a view on another person’s login. If a team wants the same AR view, each person builds it, which takes about a minute.
  • A view lists applets you already have. The builder offers only applets installed on your login. An applet you uninstall drops out of every view, and it comes back if it is installed again.

For GadgetSphere’s AR job you need one view: receipt voucher, debtor report, statement of account and sales invoice. Build it and make it your default, and your first click every morning lands on it.

To build one, press + beside the view buttons, give the view a name, search for applets and add them, then press Save.

To make it your default, press and hold its button for about a second. A small menu opens with Make as default. The button then reads (Default), and you land on that view each time you sign in. The same menu has Disable default, which sends you back to landing on HOME. The menu does not appear for a normal click, so it is easy to miss.

The limits, stated plainly so that you do not discover them halfway through:

LimitWhat you will see
Ten views, and HOME counts as oneThe + greys out once you have HOME and nine of your own. Views made from the sidebar or your profile (below) count too
Names up to 40 charactersTyping stops at 40. Choosing a name you already use saves the new view as Name (2) and tells you so
The order of the view buttons is not savedYou can drag them for this visit only. Next time they come back in alphabetical order. HOME sorts under its stored name, default layout, unless you never had one
HOME is always thereIt shows everything installed on your login. It has no delete cross and no options menu
The launchpad’s view builder only creates viewsOpening an existing view does not let you add or remove applets there. Change it from the sidebar or from your profile (below)

To change a view you already have, open the sidebar with the button at the top left of the screen. The sidebar’s Menu Set list holds the same records as your views. Pick the view, press the pencil (Edit Menu Set), and drag tiles from the launchpad into the sidebar list. You can also add folders. A view built here can hold folders that the launchpad shows as one flat list. Press Save when you are done. The same list is under Profile (the picture at the top right) › Sidebar Selection, where you can open, change or delete any of your views. The Select box on the profile’s first tab sets your default view, the same setting as Make as default.

While a menu set is being edited, the cross on a launchpad tile uninstalls the applet. It does not remove the tile from your view. The confirmation reads Are you sure you want to UNINSTALL … for the tenant, and saying yes deletes your install of that applet. To take an applet out of a view, use the cross beside it in the sidebar list, which removes it from the menu set only. If you uninstall by mistake, install it again from the Applet Store, or ask whoever installed it for you.

Deleting your default view is safe: the next time you sign in you land on HOME.

What success looks like for this part

Your view’s button reads (Default) and you land on it after signing in again. You changed a view from the sidebar’s Menu Set list, and every applet you took out of it is still installed: it is still a tile on HOME.

Common mistakes in this part

What goes wrongWhat you seeThe fix
Removing a tile from a view with the cross on the launchpadA confirmation about uninstalling, then the applet is gone from every viewThat cross uninstalls. Remove applets from a view with the cross in the sidebar list; reinstall from the Applet Store if it is already gone
Arranging the view buttons by draggingNext sign-in they are back in alphabetical orderOrder is not saved. Name views so that they sort the way you want, for example 1 AR, 2 Month end
Looking for Make as defaultNo such option on a normal clickPress and hold the view’s button for about a second

The rest are on the front page and on Inside an Applet.
