What the search is really doing

Step 1 — Know what the search actually asks for

You will understand why an item can vanish from one screen and not another.

  1. Items that are not stock-controlled — services
  2. Charges
  3. Non-stock lines — are not filtered this way
  4. Always appear

Step 2 — Learn that the branch is not the location

You will read a stock figure more carefully.

Step 4 — Rule out the third cause, which looks identical

You will stop reporting a category filter as a stock problem.

  1. Two completely different causes
  2. One identical symptom
  3. The only way to tell is to check

Step 5 — Run the one-minute check, in this order

You will have an answer rather than a theory.

Step 6 — Say the right thing when you report it

Your report will be actionable.

  1. Three sentences do it: the item code
  2. The location code you checked and its quantity
  3. Whether the same item comes up at another shop
