The three decisions that close behind you

You can say which three fields on the item create screen you will never be able to change again from that screen…

Three fields, one screen, no undo

Step 1 — Name the three fields before you fill any of them

You will slow down on the right part of a short form.

Step 2 — Learn the exact moment the door closes

You will stop believing the comfortable version.

What this step names
  1. The create screen auto-saves as soon as code
  2. Name
  3. Type
  4. Unit
  5. Currency are all present

Step 3 — Understand what the lock is protecting

You will be able to explain the refusal instead of apologising for it.

Step 4 — Know the permission that unlocks nothing

You will not waste an afternoon on a permission grant.

What this step names
  1. It is registered
  2. It is active
  3. An administrator can grant it
  4. It appears in the permission list next to permissions that do work

The door nobody locked

Step 5 — Recognise the one door that is not locked

You will treat one routine job with more care.

What this step names
  1. No validation on the server refuses a change of item type or…
  2. In a comment on the field itself
  3. Saying the backend checks were never written
  4. The control was disabled instead

Fixing one that is already wrong

Step 6 — Replace an item properly, and free its code

You can retire a mis-typed item without losing anything.

  1. Create a new code with the right type and tracking…
  2. Switch the listing filter to All before you conclude the platform is wrong
