Where the cost on the Costings tab came from

You can say, for each figure on an item's Costings tab, which process last wrote it and how old it is…

A tab that only displays

Step 1 — Start from the fact that the tab computes nothing

You will ask a better first question.

  • Open an item's Costings tab and you see a row per company with several…

Step 2 — Trust the moving average as of the last finalised document

You will know exactly how current one figure is.

Step 3 — Read the weighted average as a last-month figure

You will stop expecting one column to move.

Step 4 — Expect moving average and FIFO to disagree

You will stop treating a difference as an error.

What this step names
  1. FIFO is maintained by a different processor
  2. From a different mechanism — the first-in-first-out register baskets
  3. Updated on purchase-side
  4. Sales-side documents — and it is kept independently of the moving average

Columns with nothing behind them

Step 5 — Know the four columns that are empty everywhere

You will not build anything on sand.

What this step names
  1. LIFO
  2. Manual cost
  3. Replacement cost
  4. The landed-cost columns appear on the tab with headings and cells like…

When yesterday's number moves

Step 6 — Answer the cost that changed for a closed month

You can settle an argument that recurs every month end.

What this step names
  1. Somebody reports on a period
  2. Comes back a week later
  3. The cost is different
