Finalise: what the button starts, and what it writes · presentation 4 of 5

Where the cost on your line came from

You can say which of the many cost columns on a document line are actually filled, which background step filled each one…

Written afterwards

Step 1 — Know that none of it exists when Finalise returns

You will have the timing right.

What this step names
  1. Three levels
  2. Three separate queue rows
  3. The document is already FINAL and already visible throughout

Step 2 — Know exactly which columns get written

You will stop trusting the empty ones.

What this step names
  1. The document line has cost columns for six methods — moving average
  2. Weighted average
  3. FIFO
  4. LIFO
  5. Manual and replacement — each in a location flavour and a company…
  6. Plus landed-cost

Not the cost of this line

Step 3 — Know what the stored amount actually measures

You will stop misreading the biggest number on the line.

Step 4 — Understand why the margin report multiplies instead of reading

You will know why two figures that should agree do.

What this step names
  1. It takes the stored unit cost *price*
  2. Multiplies by the line's own quantity and signum
  3. Calls that the cost of the line

Step 5 — Avoid the three cost bases that return nothing

You will never send anyone a hundred-percent margin.

Step 6 — Remember the two documents that get no cost at all

You will know where to look when a whole class of line is blank.

What this step names
  1. No sales document ever posts a cost-of-sales journal…
  2. Sales
  3. Discount
  4. Tax and forex
  5. Cost of goods sold arrives once a month from a completely different…
